Margit, the Fell Omen: Complete Boss Guide

Margit, the Fell Omen: Complete Boss Guide

Overview

Margit, the Fell Omen is an early-game boss in Elden Ring encountered at the gates of Stormveil Castle in Limgrave. He serves as a formidable gatekeeper who tests the Tarnished’s readiness for the challenges ahead. Margit is later revealed to be an alter ego of Morgott, the Omen King, a demigod of the Golden Lineage. Throughout the game, Margit appears in multiple encounters, progressively revealing his true identity and his role as a protector of the Erdtree.

Lore and Background

Identity and Role

Margit is an Omen—a cursed being born with horns and other bestial features—who gained notoriety during the Shattering. According to sword monuments in-game, “The Second Defense of Leyndell: The Fell Omen stacks high the corpses of heroes, yet the Erdtree remains unshaken.” He slaughtered countless champions who harbored ambitions for Lordship, earning his fearsome reputation.

His true identity is Morgott, the Omen King, a demigod of the Golden Lineage who, despite receiving no love or acceptance from his own kind, took up the responsibility of protecting the Erdtree. Margit is the guise he uses to hunt Tarnished who approach the Erdtree’s domains.

Third Encounter (Leyndell): After the Tarnished makes their way through Leyndell and reaches the Elden Throne, Margit stands between them and the Erdtree. He repudiates the other demigods, calling them all traitors, before revealing himself to be Morgott, the Omen King. This final battle has different mechanics and a separate boss entry.

Boss Fight: Stormveil Gate

Arena and Environment

Margit’s arena is a narrow, long pathway flanked by chasms on both sides. While the boss cannot fall to his death, the player must constantly reposition to avoid having their back against the wall or the brink. The area contains:

Phase 1 (100% - 60% HP)

Margit is quick and relentless, with powerful combos and rapid follow-ups that make it hard to find windows to punish him. Key characteristics:

Phase 2 (Below 60% HP)

Phase 2 begins when his health drops to approximately 60%, signaled by a hammer sweep followed by a jumping strike. New abilities are added:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is defeating Margit required to enter Stormveil Castle? No. While Margit blocks the main gate, players can access Stormveil Castle by using a side entrance to the southeast, bypassing the boss fight entirely. However, defeating Margit is still required for the achievement/trophy and to access the Talisman Pouch reward.

Can I skip the Stormveil Gate encounter and come back later? Yes. You can explore other areas, level up, and return to face Margit at any time before defeating Morgott, the Omen King. The encounter remains available until Morgott is defeated.

What level should I be to fight Margit? Most players find success between levels 20-30 with a weapon upgraded to at least +3. However, skill and build have greater impact than level alone.

Can Margit be parried? Some of his regular weapon attacks can be parried, but holy weapon attacks (summoned in Phase 2) cannot be parried.

Is Margit the same as Morgott? Yes. Margit, the Fell Omen is an alter ego used by Morgott, the Omen King. The game reveals this connection later in the story. Defeating Margit does not affect the later Morgott boss fight.

What happens if I defeat Morgott before fighting Margit? If Morgott, the Omen King is defeated first, the Margit encounter at Stormveil Gate and the Capital Outskirts encounter will no longer occur. This is a potential missable encounter for players who progress too far.

Can I summon help for the fight? Yes. Offline: You can summon Sorcerer Rogier (summon sign visible near the boss arena). Online: You can summon other players via cooperative multiplayer.

Does Margit drop anything besides the Talisman Pouch? The Stormveil Gate encounter drops 12,000 runes and the Talisman Pouch (increases maximum talisman slots). The Capital Outskirts encounter drops 16,800 runes and the Viridian Amber Medallion +1 (increases stamina).

What is Margit’s weakness? He is weakest to slashing and fire damage, and is susceptible to bleed and poison status effects.

Why does Margit appear outside Leyndell? During the Capital Outskirts encounter, Margit possesses the body of a nearby Commoner to continue hunting the Tarnished. This encounter reinforces his role as a persistent guardian who opposes anyone seeking the Elden Ring.
